Curadvisor: From Data Broker to Gambling Website

Background on Curadvisor

If you go to curadvisor.com you'll see a very shady Indonesian sports betting website. Actually, we don't recommend visiting that site at all, definitely don't click anything. Curadvisor wasn't always a gambling site. That domain used to be owned and used by PeopleConnect (a large data broker conglomerate that runs stalker sites like intelius.com and truthfinder.com). It was another free people search site that allowed anyone to search your name, address, and connections, while making money off advertisements when people visited their site. This practice should be illegal and Kanary fought to remove data from this site for over 5 years since our founding. Our members collectively removed over 5,800 records from curadvisor.

What happened?

It's common for people look up sites to go on and offline. We've written about several shutting down (gobutler, gladiknow) and the data broker and spyware owner Patrick Hinchy lawsuit. As large data aggregators and brokers try to stay under the radar, they can't stay in one place without drawing attention to themselves. That's what was happening with curadvisor.

So it isn't surprising that curadvisor went offline in February of this year. But what is surprising is what happened next. Several days after the site went down, team Kanary checked the site again, and it was being used to run an entirely different business called JEKPOT88. Yes, a gambling website. It is unclear if a new company had purchased the domain once PeopleConnect retired it or if PeopleConnect allowed a gambling site to takeover the website under their ownership.

Following the Who Is records

Who Is records show you the history and ownership of a domain. When we looked up curadvisor, we found out that it had been updated 2025-02-24, right when we detected the site going offline. This Updated Date on the Who Is record suggests that it was sold to a new company and is no longer operated by PeopleConnect.

Want to check it out yourself? The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has a FREE look up tool where you can review the history of any domain. https://lookup.icann.org/en. If you ever are suspicious about a website and why it's changed, you can trace updates though they are limited.

What can you do?

Well, first of all, stay away from this Indonesian sports betting site that's taken over curadvisor's domain. And most importantly, keep being proactive. Actions like opting out of people connect continue to put pressure on shady sites to shut down or move. With your help, we can keep putting pressure on this shady industry and make it harder for them to turn a profit.
