Faster Data Removal With These Four Kanary Features

Locking down your personal data is critical when you’re dealing with an upcoming public event or escalating threat. Several Kanary features may not be a fit for all Kanary members, and are turned off by default or require your opt in. But if you’re optimizing for speed or dealing with an urgent situation, this guide is meant to walk you through 4 features in Kanary that you should make sure are enabled on your account to get the best experience.
1. Designate an email for escalation
Some websites are particular about only accepting removal requests from specific emails. Occasionally, we will need to use a personal email of yours for escalation, whether that’s cc’ing you on a request or submitting your email through a webform.
We do not share your information you use on your profile for privacy and security reasons, so you need to explicitly set an email you are ok with us using. Once it is set, it’s likely you’ll receive emails to that inbox that requires your response to complete a removal. So make sure the email you use is one you check every few days. But we do not recommend that you use your primary personal email, in order to keep that one as private from data brokers as possible. More on why that’s important.

How to verify a new email to add?
Go to members: https://my.kanary.com/members/summary
Click update on your information
On the profile list on the left, click on Emails, add an email for verification right at the top
Verify the email by clicking a confirmation sent to that email from Kanary

2. Enable personal domain & email run by Kanary
When personal emails are too slow or members choose not to opt into to providing an escalation email, we use a personal email we help you set up. This involves Kanary purchasing a domain and setting up an email for you to use just for removal requests. The personalization of the domain helps build trust with websites receiving requests from you. This feature is in Beta and for some sites or removals may not be effective.
On your removal settings, just click ‘Enable for your account’. That will get set up and used for your requests within 7-14 days: https://my.kanary.com/dashboard/settings/removal-settings
3. Follow the DIY steps on blocked or slow results
On every result, Kanary shows the steps it is taking and how you could do the request yourself. At the end of the day, Kanary's job is to streamline the process and figure out the best way to get these sites to respect your privacy. But sometimes, a nudge from you, the person dealing with the safety concern, is the best person for the site to hear from. The steps on your results page, will walk you through details like who to email, what to say, which form to fill out… By following these steps, especially for blocked exposures, you’re emphasizing the urgency of the request to the site.

Click on an active result, scroll down
You’ll see a list of steps and you can click on any step to see the details and do the step yourself if you have the time and need to speed something up
